Vote for your favourite name here

Poll complete. "Robots & Dinosaurs" beat "MakeSpace" 24 to 18.

Nearest competitor had two votes.

The name "Sydney hackerspace" is understandable by those here, but is likely to have an adverse reaction in public use.  It is likely to be a problem especially with legal related work - including dealing with real estate, and dealing with local council.  It is suggested that we use this space to brainstorm and see if we can come up with a general consensus.

What to do:

1) Add any keywords that you think are appropriate

2) Add naming suggestions to the table below, using keywords as a starting point

3) Add your name (or "+1" if anonymous) to the like/dislike column, and add any appropriate comments

Sydney hackerspace Marcus

Gavin,

Pete.

ATSystems,

Adriaan,

Phil

Markus: Has negative connotations of work "hacker"

Pete: That's what we've been calling it so far + it's instantly descriptive.

ATSystems: I think "Cyber terrorism" is the new "hacker".. i likey

Macca: I think this works best as a subtitle, e.g. 'R&D: a Sydney Hackerspace.' And then it doesn't limit us to just one hackerspace.

Shack Space Vorn

R3becca

Gavin

ATSystems

Cleverly disguises abovementioned word :) (shack = syd hack)
Space Shack Vorn

As above, but sounds... spacey (cue: "oooo")

adam: I like the shack part because it sounds friendly but still has the word hack in it.

Kean: mee too

Kathryn: I will never be able to think of it as anything but 'Love Shack'

Spark Park Greg

Kean, R3becca

Gavin

Sparkpad Jeremy     This is where ideas are born, like sparks from the base of Jacob's ladder :)
Incubator Bigiain Macca

Riffing off Jeremy's "Sparkpad" here, I'm thinking more of a place where ideas grow into _things_... (To me, "Ideas" are born on a bus or in a cafe or riding the bike - turning ideas into _things_ needs tools and space and support and assistance... It needs a hackerspace.

Macca: Very nice, all the right positive connotations, none of the negatives.

Flux Capacitor Rich Kathryn

Makes me smile :)

Kathryn: I like 'Flux' as a space name :)

35 South Fifth Jon Kathryn

35 South Fith Avenue was the address of one of  N. Tesla's NY Labs.

Kathryn: Only problem is that it could send people to 35 South Fifth Ave, Campsie NSW

SydHack James W     Catchy, but still has negative connotations with 'hack'.
The Change Room Kathryn     A play on change rooms in stores, because it's where you try out new things
The Whole Earth Collective Kathryn     An homage to the Whole Earth Catalog
Millbrook Kathryn     Where Dr Timothy Leary performed mind-altering experiments. While I'm not suggesting we tacitly condone drug use, it's the mind-changing that interests me.
The Room of Requirement Kathryn

Gavin: Likely to get sued (nice suggestion though)

Kathryn: Good point. Let's call it Rivendell.

Jokes for nerds!  The Room of Requirement is a space in the Harry Potter world that is magically filled with whatever you need.

ECT (electro-convulsive therapy) Rev Simon Rumble
ECT (electro-compulsive therapy) Greg Turner Kris, Gesling, Kean, Kathryn   I like it, but these ones could cause problems in their own right :-)
Workshop/Playshop Iain Chalmers

Andrew (see below)

Phil

Forge Space Gavin Smith ATSystems

Gives sense of 'making' and 'crafting' but also quite manly :)

Kathryn: Hey, there will be girls in the hackerspace! We'll bake and have pillowfights and stuff.

Gavin: So what's not manly about baking and pillow fights? :)

Bezerk's Bhackyard R3becca Kathryn

Just my silly addition to the mix, despite thinking 'hack' scares people :)

Kathryn: I really like "Bhackyard" :)

[the] SHAMBLE or The Shambles (S being Space) R3becca Gavin, Kean

Sydney Hackers, Artists, Makers, Builders and Lovers of the Electronic, [Space]. for the origin of the word see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shambles

(Also has nice zombie feel. --Gavin)

Kean: brilliant in so many ways, only concern is it doesn't quite "invite" people in

The Boom Room johnh

This that make you go BOOM

Kathryn: If it's in a warehouse, we're going to get a lot of confused ravers.

Jon: we could make a fortune selling whistles & heart candy

l33t str33t Adam Synnott     From the guy who brought you "tag hack vandal's haunt"
Make-space Evan Predavec Gavin
R&D (robots and dinosaurs) Kathryn

Jon,

Adam Synnott,

Gavin,

Brendan,

Macca,

Rob

I like the name but i think dinosaursandrobots.com got there first despite the order of the words.. also need i mention: dinosaursfuckingrobots.com (which i think is a negative but people may differ)  [oh well, i'm too late, was AFK last week/weekend, still think we could have been more original] R3becca.

A play on "research and development", which is what we'll be doing, but also a secret reference to the two coolest things ever

Jon: What about Ninjas & Pirates? - I do like R&D though.

Kathryn: Well obviously we will have open days, called 'Ninja & Pirate Days', where visitors can come and learn about us, provided they dress appropriately.

Gavin: I can see the logo already. A robot and dinosaur holding up a suitably epic coat of arms!

Brendan: Now that it's sunk in, I think this is an awesome name!

Macca: I like it, but is it to close to www.dinosaursandrobots.com ?

Skunkworks/

Skunkworx

Jon     Just for the sake of another option. I don't like it as much as some of the others but it does embody fairly well what we'll do.

The Mill

Huw

The Bhackyard Pat     Similar to above suggestion, but simpler...
Royal Society for Study and Protection of Dinosauric Robotoids, Sydney Chapter Pat     Or something else archaic. Could be used for fundraising ala the 826 shops (http://www.826national.org/stores/)
ECT (Electro Constructive Therapy) ATSystems (Mike)     ..The tagline could be "because its good for your circuits" and the logo could be a hammer with one of those brain-ready bowl hat things. Also hi, i'm new here ^_^
Sydney Shedscape

ATSystems

(Mike)

Like a shed, but with resources and potential as wide as you can imagine!

Local Makery

Matt

Pia,

Phil, R3becca

The suggestion is, these spaces should be as common as high street shops.

Work In Progress

Phil Wright

Matt

Adriaan (The Works)

Andrew (Sydney Workshop)

Possibliy 'Works in progress', or simply 'Works' or 'The Works'.

Sydney Workshop

Andrew Peel Phil

Alt: "Open Workshop"

1. Does what it says on the tin

2. Not esoteric enough to exclude or preclude any type of activity, regardless of background, skills, interests.

3. Requires no explanation of what it is when discussed with friends and family

4. Name is irrelevant, clearly everyone is going to call it something different anyway

Macca: Maybe 'Sydney Community Workshop'?

Tech Shed Justin Phil

Tech - fairly open but common theme.

Shed's the space and it's a bit aussie

ThingSmiths, Inc Brendan     Meh, it just popped into my head
TechnoSyders jsk     play on Sydneysiders and technology.
HiLoTech jsk     We're doing both hi and lo technology
SydTec Andrew Peel     I liked @jsk TechnoSyders, so I shortened it... aaaah efficiency.
coLab Phil W     Collaboration Laboratory
HEATS Inc Dave Braun

Phil

George, R3becca

Hacking, Electronics and Technology Sydney - or any acronym you can think of. It sounds like Heatsink.

alt - Sydney HEAT

Sydney MakeSpace

Kean

Pete

A creative yet sensible name that encompasses everything we do.
Sydtronic AP     Good for search engine optimisation
Common Ground Robert A     Nerd in-joke and evokes feeling of community
Sydney Technomancers Jeremy     -mancer, from the Greek mantis, meaning 'prophet'. A little steampunky, plus a (fairly obvious) tie to the locality. Alternatively, 'Sydney Technomancers' Guild' or 'Sydney Guild of Technomancers'.

Suggested Keywords:

Sydney

Technical / Technology

Laboratory / Lab

Space / Zone / Yard / Spot / Pad

Build / Make / Fabricate

Community

Electronics / Spark

Mechanics

Mechatronics

Robotics

Art / Form / Create

IMHO, the names which involve things such as 'Space' 'Yard', etc. are to be preferred, since it has the connotation for the unintiated that you can just walk in. People that haven't heard of 'The Sydney Lab' before would probably not realise you can just turn up. -- Gavin Smith.

Actually Tesla's 35 South Fifth lab burned down - so maybe not =) ..

would one of our aims be about challenging the negative connotations of hacking?

Kris, yes I would like to think so - but having it in our name, as opposed to a tag-line or description might make things difficult. The issue is when we don't have an opportunity to really explain what we do, and some just sees the term "hacker" and makes judgement on that. Local council and potential suppliers are examples of where we could waste a lot of time explaining the misunderstanding of the term, and still have people not get it.

Fair call Kean. At the moment I'm loving the love shack and ECT (but can see people having a problem with it). Shambles I think is coming out on top at the moment for me though with the awesome acronym and it just has the perfect feel to it as im sure that's how it will operate for a long time.

How about "hack and the beanstalk" or "the mad hackers tea party" ? or something simple like "hack-saw"

As fun as it is to have a cool and interesting name, in the end I think a fairly straightforward name has significant advantages.

A name which describes the activity, the space and possibly mentioning Sydney seems to me to be most appropriate. When thinking of places where the name is likely to be seen, I imagine things like internal and external publications, event promotions, and market/fair stalls - and having a name that's immediately accessible to outsiders in these situations is a good thing. So things like "Sydney Hackerspace", "Sydney Workshop" or "Sydney Community Workshop" work for me from that point of view.

I like Sydney Hackerspace in particular. It's straightforward, but has just enough funk to keep it interesting. And the 'space' part mellows out the 'Hacker' part to a certain extent - hopefully enough for people to at least investigate further before passing judgement.

Remember that when we get incorporated we can add "Inc" or "Incorporated" to the end of the name.

I like "shed" as an Australianised flavour of space/zone/spot/place but I can't think what's best to go with it.

I was bored this afternoon, playing with some designs, and without meaning to used the words Sydney Hacker Space. It's so not official, so no flaming, just playing around. Honest reactions please.

Hiya Andrew - imho a little to rigid. Big (Ian) mentioned a rusty logo in the last meeting a la Mythbusters and in some sense that grunge approach appeals more to me. Mind you - taste right .. anyone has a differing view =) ..

So what's the go with the poll - does the result stand so we can move on ;-)?

Gavin Smith said

Okey Dokie. Just gotten feedback from the Board-Of-Hackers TM. Thanks
to board members who responded extremely quickly.

1. We would like to announce that name from the group poll, "Robots
and Dinosaurs" has been accepted at least the temporary name for the
group.

This will allow us to form an association, rent the house, and do
other legal miscellany as is necessary to actually start operating.

2. In 6 months time when we are settled down we will have a group vote
as to whether to change the name or not.

Congratulations to everyone who voted, and I'm sure we are going to
have a lot of fun in the group!
